Scientific and artistic qualifications at the ASL School
The ASL School offers two alternative ways of qualification for young academics
- Doctoral studies (roughly equivalent to obtaining a PhD.)
- Artistic qualification
Doctoral studies in the fields of architecture, urban and regional planning, and landscape Planning and Architecture requires independent scientific research to be carried out. The ASL School offers a rich variety of subject areas.
The ASL Department offers the following academic degrees:
- Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.)
- Doctor of Economic and Social Sciences (Dr. rer. pol).
Admission to doctoral studies
Prerequisites for admission to doctoral studies are:
- a university degree as a “Diplom-Ingenieur” or a master's degree in a relevant field.
- submission of an outline description of the intended doctoral subject.
- an arrangement for your doctoral project with a primary supervisor (head of a discipline) at the ASL School.
- formal registration with the doctoral committee of the University of Kassel.

Admission to artistic qualification
Prerequisites for admission to doctoral studies are:
- a university degree as a “Diplom-Ingenieur” or a master's degree in a relevant field.
- submission of an outline description of the intended doctoral subject.
- an arrangement for your doctoral project with a primary supervisor (head of a discipline) at the ASL School.
- formal registration with the doctoral committee of the University of Kassel.

Financing
There are different ways in which a scientific qualification (doctorate) and an artistic qualification at the ASL School can be financed. These include
- State-financed position
By appointment as a ‘scientific associate’ in one of the professorial fields of the ASL department - Third-party-funded position
May be awarded in departmental research projects funded by third parties - Scholarships
It is possible to apply for grants from foundations, government agencies or the University of Kassel to fund the research and dissertation phase. - Open doctorates
You may contact a professor in the department at any time to discuss a PhD topic
Doctoral / PhD Workshops
Doctoral workshops are one way of actively supporting the department’s PhD students. You can learn more on this website.
In addition to the doctoral/PhD workshops arranged by the individual departments, the ASL School offers two interdisciplinary doctoral/PhD workshops:
- The PhD workshop “Planning and Building in Post-modern times”
- The international PhD workshop “DOKONARA – PhD workshop Sustainable Spatial Development"
Graduate Center for Environmental Research and Teaching (gradZ Umwelt)
GradZ Umwelt is an interdisciplinary institution of the University of Kassel, primarily for PhD students and master‘s degree students, that supports environmentally related research and teaching.
A web platform of the Graduate Center for Environmental Research and Teaching presents different programs for structured doctoral training in various environmental topics, as well as interesting and useful links related to earning a doctorate.
