The Department of Visual Art teaches artistic ways of thinking and working as the foundation of creative expression and organization. The artistic practice we foster is a complex thought process that combines different forms of knowledge and harnesses the difference between concept and reality as a source of inspiration. In order to develop, explicitly communicate and evaluate ideas, meanings and concepts, students acquire a broad interpretive proficiency in various media. These include traditional techniques such as drawing, sculpture, painting, printmaking and multimedia art forms, as well as newer technological media such as photography, film, fabbing and processing. By critically analyzing contemporary art and art history and deliberately incorporating influences from technological research and the natural sciences, we promote the development of independent, process-oriented artistic thought and action.
BAU KUNST ERFINDEN [Building Art Invention] has been awarded the Higher Education Prize for Teaching Excellence. It is awarded annually by the Hessen State Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts and the Hertie Foundation and is the most valuable prize and highest recognition in Germany.
